Raising pasture chickens the right way isn’t complicated, but it does require the right setup. After lots of trial and error on the farm, we’ve landed on a short list of tools we trust to keep our birds healthy, hydrated, and safe from whatever the Maryland woods decide to send our way at 2am.
These are the actual products sitting in our coops and running on our pastures right now. If we link it, we use it.
Steel Waterers
Plastic waterers crack, leak, and grow algae faster than you’d think. Steel waterers hold up through Maryland winters, clean in minutes, and don’t leach anything into the water your birds are drinking all day. If you’re serious about your flock, skip the plastic entirely.
For the brooder, we use glass jar waterers for our chicks to start before upgrading them to a larger steel waterer.

Stainless Steel Feeders
We run different feeders at each stage of the birds’ lives — here’s exactly what we use and when.
For the brooder, we start our chicks on glass jar feeders. Easy to monitor feed levels, easy to clean, and the glass means no off-gassing around birds that are still developing. Simple and old-school in the best way.

Once chicks are past the brooder stage and growing out, we move to stainless steel feeders. Stainless holds up, doesn’t harbor bacteria the way plastic does, and lasts long enough that you stop thinking about replacing it.

For our meat birds specifically, we use a steel feeding trough. It accommodates more birds at once, handles the volume they need during the grow-out phase, and cleans up fast.
45″ Chicken Feeding Trough Large Capacity Stainless Steel Chicken Feeder

When the birds move out to pasture, this is what travels with them. A larger capacity box means fewer fill-ups during the day and enough access points that everyone eats without competition. Built for the field, not the barn.

Digestion & Gut Health
The food is only as good as what the bird can absorb. These two products are non-negotiables in our rotation.
We offer grit separately from feed in its own pan. For our meat birds especially, consistent grit access makes a real difference in digestion and overall health. Chickens don’t have teeth. Grit is how they process what they eat. Don’t skip it.
Manna Pro Poultry Grit for Chickens

A small amount of Apple Cider Vinegar in the waterers keeps the pH balanced and supports a healthy gut. We use it across the whole farm — chickens, cows, and lamb all get it. We buy it by the gallon because we go through it. The Woeber’s gallon jug is the most practical format we’ve found for farm-scale use.

Coop & Brooder Maintenance
A clean coop isn’t just about smell — it’s about bird health. These are the two products we rely on to keep things clean between deep cleans.
We use agricultural lime in the brooder to keep the sand clean and dry. It neutralizes odor, reduces moisture, and keeps ammonia levels down, which matters a lot for young birds whose respiratory systems are still developing.

Food grade DE goes down in the coop to keep it clean and control mites and parasites naturally. OMRI listed for organic use, safe for the birds, and it works. We don’t use anything in our coop that we wouldn’t feel comfortable being around ourselves — this clears that bar easily.

Predator Protection
This is the part most backyard flock owners underestimate until it’s too late. We take it seriously.
This is our primary fencing setup for the pasture — 42″ high, 100 feet of electric net fencing in white and black, and it comes with a solar energizer, FiberTuff support posts, and a tester right out of the box. The solar energizer means no running power to the field. We rotate this with the birds as they move across pasture, and it goes up and comes down faster than you’d expect once you’ve done it a few times.

The Jackery runs as supplemental power on the property — particularly useful when we need reliable backup power away from the barn or during an extended stretch of overcast days. It’s quiet, charges efficiently, and has never let us down when we needed it.

Why This Matters
The tools you use reflect the standards you hold. At Crescent Moon Farms, we raise our chickens on pasture, rotate them regularly, and take predator management seriously — because that’s what it takes to raise birds the right way in central Maryland.
If you’re building out your own flock or just getting started, we hope this saves you the trial and error we went through. Buy once, buy right.
All products linked are ones we purchase and use ourselves. Some links are Amazon affiliate links, which means we may earn a small commission if you purchase through them — at no extra cost to you. That commission helps keep this farm running and this content coming.
